Salvaging the Masterpiece – Friday Fictioners.

Nancy was an artist and a dreamer. After visiting Monet’s garden, she was determined to transform her slimy, mosquito-infested pond into a masterpiece. Harry Hemsworth, reputedly a cousin of the legendary Thor, was doing the work, and naturally Nancy had to supervise.

Finally, the first lily had opened, and her art class was coming in the morning. The cake was just out of the oven, when her grandson burst through the backdoor clutching her precious lily: “Nanna, I brought you a flower.”

Nancy was dying inside, but tried to smile. Hopefully, Harry could sticky tape it back on.

I particularly liked “The cake was just out of the oven”. It’s a slightly unexpected detail that is exactly right and describes the nature of the art class better than anything else could. I love Nancy’s self control when confronted by the plucked waterlily!

Thank you very much, Penny. I was very pleased with how this one panned out. Th backstory which inspired all these bits and pieces also makes a story. My parents had a rather handsome handyman who was rather popular with the ladies although he was a decent character. A cousin of the Hemsworths appeared on The Voice here and a blogging friend in the UK built a pond a few years ago. My parents have also been to Monet’s Garden. I didn’t get there when I was in France. I think calm water lilies were a bit to placid for a 22 year old.
Hope you are keeping well and safe.
    Best wishes,

The Hemsworth cousin part wasn’t made up. One appeared on The Voice. In terms of his appearance, let”s just say he didn’t let the side down.

Thanks very much. I thought it commented nicely on those groups of ladies when they get together and everything is expected to be just so, but in this instance it only has to look okay. Stay in position until everyone goes home.

Thanks very much, Rochelle. I think that can be one of the great distinctions between parents and grandparents. The grandparents can have such patience and forgiveness.

Cousin of Thor, I thought as a grandchild he may have been watching the marvel films and leaping about playing Thor, now I guess its something to do with the singer on the voice? its a lovely piece with so much crammed in, it reads beautifully excellently done!!
